Christian Education

From the Christian Education Director

Dear Sunday School Families,

I hope your summers are starting off well. I am very happy with the way Children and Youth Sunday wrapped up our Sunday School year and extremely proud of all the children and youth who participated in the service. They did a spectacular job!

Even though we are taking a break from Sunday School for the summer, there are still opportunities for your children to be involved with the church.

This July when First UMC Melrose plays host to the UM ARMY I hope to see many of you involved, particularly the youth. First UMC Melrose will be providing dinner for our visitors the day they arrive, Sunday July 18th, and we will need servers for the meal. Also, all of First UMC Melrose will be invited by UM ARMY to attend their Client Night on Thursday July 22nd. Both are great opportunities for our children and youth to see the possibilities of service within our United Methodist community. I hope you will all mark your calendars for July 18th and 22nd.

I will be spending the summer learning more about First UMC Melrose and the goals this community has for its Christian Education program. The teachers will be meeting in July to plan for next year, and I will be searching for new teachers for the fall. If you feel that you could offer your time to teach Sunday School, please let me know.

The goal is to have enough teachers per classroom to ensure that our teachers can continue to function both as shepherds of our children and members of the congregation through regular attendance in worship. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any comments, questions, or suggestions.

My email address is ahillman@bu.edu, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Blessings, Anne

Sunday School
A friendly place to learn about God's promises to all his children.  We provide nursery care for both Sunday worship services. Church School meets during the 10: 30 a.m. service.  Classes are for preschool through grade 12. Monthly, the entire School meets to sing, discuss service projects, and celebrate individual and group accomplishments.

The church provides youths opportunities for United Methodist summer retreats or short-term mission experiences.  Children and youths may need to apply for these opportunities.

Youth Programs
Our church young people periodically gather for youth group activities. Our church’s commitment is to help our youth understand how God is present in their lives. Our young people participate in a number of activities throughout the life of the church, including education, music, fellowship, and helping ministries.

There are some excellent summer camp and summer mission opportunities available to our youth.  More information on these programs will be posted to this page as it becomes available.

 Adult Education
We support opportunities for adults to grow in their understanding of discipleship. Bible studies meet weekly, following a shared light family style meal. In addition, we sponsor the Great Decisions study group, using materials published by the Council on Foreign Relations. We offer our adults ways to explore with other Christians how faith changes our perception of world events and guides our daily living.
